How to Get to Niseko

Travelling to Niseko is straightforward once you’ve arrived in Japan. Below is an easy overview of the most common routes to reach Hokkaido’s famous ski region with confidence and minimal hassle.

For most international visitors, Tokyo is the main entry point to Japan. More than 80% of overseas arrivals pass through either Haneda Airport (HND) or Narita Airport (NRT) before continuing north to Hokkaido.

Both airports offer direct domestic flights to New Chitose Airport (CTS), but they differ in convenience:

• Haneda is closer to central Tokyo and better for quick domestic transfers.
• Narita often has cheaper long-haul fares but involves a longer journey into the city and fewer late-evening flight options.

Haneda sits just 30 minutes from downtown Tokyo by train, making it the most convenient option for connecting to Hokkaido. While the airport operates 24/7, domestic flights generally wind down by early evening.

If your international flight lands after roughly 20:00–21:00, staying overnight at one of Haneda’s connected terminal hotels is recommended. Otherwise, travellers arriving earlier can either rest at the airport or enjoy time in Tokyo before heading onward.

Narita lies around 60–90 minutes east of central Tokyo. It serves a large number of international carriers and can offer attractive fares.

Your next step is a domestic flight from Tokyo to New Chitose Airport, located just outside Sapporo. The flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and dozens of services operate daily from both Haneda and Narita.

Several Japanese carriers operate the Tokyo–Sapporo route. In general order of cost (highest to lowest):

Return fares typically fall between ¥28,000 and ¥62,000, depending on the season and how early you book. Prices increase significantly closer to the departure date, particularly during busy winter weeks.

Although most visitors transit through Tokyo, New Chitose Airport receives a growing number of direct international flights during the winter season. Cities with seasonal or regular connections include:

• Beijing
• Bangkok

In addition, from December 2025, Qantas will launch a seasonal direct route from Sydney, offering Australian travellers a convenient non-stop option to reach Hokkaido.

Operating from December through March, Resort Liner coaches provide a reliable connection between New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, and Niseko. Drop-offs include major hotels and the Hirafu Welcome Centre. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak season.

The train is the most economical route but requires a transfer and more time.

• The JR station sits directly beneath the airport terminal.
• Purchase a cash-only JR ticket to Kutchan, the nearest town to Niseko Hirafu.
• The journey takes around 3.5 hours, including a simple change at Otaru Station (the connecting train is usually waiting on the opposite platform).
• Upon arrival in Kutchan, winter bus services connect to Hirafu and accept contactless payment.

The final train to Kutchan leaves around 17:30. Build in at least an hour after landing to collect your bags and buy tickets. Those arriving later should stay overnight at the Air Terminal Hotel or in nearby Sapporo and continue the next morning.

If you prefer to travel light, the Yamato “Takkyubin” counter near the airport exit can deliver skis and baggage directly to your Niseko accommodation. Delivery typically takes 1–2 days and costs roughly ¥4,000 per ski bag (cash only).
